• At the Chose France summit, Nokia announced that it will recruit for its R&D centers in France
  • The Finnish company is currently developing advanced 5G and 6G
  • Its new strategy is to increase market share in telecommunications

Nokia has been out of the phone market for a long time (current “Nokia” devices are marketed by another company that uses a license). On the other hand, it is still a major player when it comes to connectivity. And for the development of future technologies in this field, France will play an important role. Nokia indeed has R&D centers in France. And on the occasion of the Chose France summit, it announced that it will strengthen its presence in the country, for the development of advanced 5G and 6G, according to our colleagues from the Digital Factory.

Over 5 to 8 years, Nokia could create up to 500 new jobs at its sites in Paris-Saclay and Lannion (Brittany). An announcement that may seem surprising, insofar as, a few days ago, an article by Marianne mentioned a new social plan at Alcatel, a subsidiary of Nokia, which could concern up to 173 people. In addition, at the start of the year, France Bleu mentioned the closure of the RFS factories (a subsidiary of Nokia) in Trignac, which specialize in satellite dishes. A closure that would have resulted in 117 layoffs.

New strategy at Nokia

In summary, Nokia announces new jobs in France, while it has just made redundant. However, it must be taken into account that today the Finnish company is embarking on its new strategy. A trajectory that Nokia announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, along with its new logo. “(…) we share our updated business and technology strategy with a focus on unlocking the exponential potential of networks – pioneering a future where networks meet cloud. To signal this ambition, we are refreshing our brand to reflect who we are today – a leader in B2B technology innovation. It’s Nokia, but not like the world has seen us before”said Pekka Lundmark, president and CEO of Nokia, at the conference in February.

This new Nokia strategy is based on several pillars, including increasing market share with telecommunications service providers, but also highlighting patents and developing new technologies through investments in research and development. To achieve its new ambitions, Nokia therefore plans to invest in long-term research and is already anticipating the arrival of 6G, which will be partly developed in French R&D centers.

As for the advanced 5G or 5G Advanced, it is an improved version of the current standard which, according to Nokia, is “intended to evolve 5G to its fullest and richest capabilities.” In addition to improvements in performance and coverage, it will also allow new uses in areas such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality, industry, or even the automobile.
