ANDn 2022, “sales of 5G smartphones (fifth generation) surpassed 4G sales for the first time”, says, in an interview with Lusa, vice president of IDC in Europe for the area of mobile devices.

In fact, “5G sales already represent 58% of total smartphone sales”, a percentage that “will continue to increase in the coming years, with sales of fifth generation devices “representing 95% of total sales in 2027”, he adds.

For example, the average sales price of 5G ‘smartphones’ (535 euros in 2023) “is four times higher than that of devices (130 euros in 2023, and will remain so in the coming years”, says Francisco Jerónimo.

Last year, the smart phone market “was worth 934.30 million euros” and “in 2023 we estimate that it will reach 933.86 million euros”, estimates the official.

Despite expecting a drop in units sold, “the average price will continue to rise” — around 2.3% -, “so the total market value will remain at 934 million euros”.

Asked about the sales perspectives for this year, he says that IDC estimates “a drop of 2.3% in units sold, or 381 million euros”, due to the slowdown in demand due to the completion of the replacement cycle and the increase in cost of living, although the average price continues to rise.

As for the brands that lead this segment, the vice president of IDC in Europe says he does not estimate a change in the ‘top 3’ of the ‘ranking’.

“Samsung will continue to lead the market, Xiaomi will consolidate its position with a closer approach to Samsung and Apple will continue in a comfortable third position and lead the high-end segment”, says the person in charge.

Asked whether it is expected that the ‘smartphone’ will be replaced by another type of device in the future, Francisco Jerónimo says that “in the next five years” such “is not foreseeable”.

“We will continue to see a continuous evolution of these devices in terms of ‘software’ — they will continue to become more intelligent and to be the ‘central command’ for many other devices in our lives (‘smart home devices’, car, among others )”, continues the official.

With regard to ‘hardware’, “we will see a growing adoption of foldable ‘smartphones’ as the offer increases, prices decrease and users recognize the benefit of having a phone and a ‘tablet’ in a single device”, anticipate.

In general terms, “we are many years away from verifying that the smartphone is a device of the past”, he concludes.
