Lima Peru.- The anti-corruption team of the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office reported that they arrested six generals in the framework of an investigation into alleged irregular promotions of police and military personnel during the government of ousted President Pedro Castillo.

In the operation, supported by the Police, the house of a former Minister of Defense of the Government of Castillo was also raided, where “documents and devices” related to the investigation into the promotion of officers in 2021 were seized, the security team added. the prosecution.

The arrests are linked to an investigation for influence peddling against the former leftist president, who in total faces six corruption cases opened by the Prosecutor’s Office. Castillo denies the accusations.

“Through these interventions, six of those investigated were arrested. The proceedings (…) include 26 raids nationwide,” the Public Ministry said on Twitter.

The former president is serving a preliminary detention for 48 months while he is investigated for charges of “rebellion” after being ousted on December 7 after illegally trying to dissolve Congress and reorganize the judiciary.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Twitter that the generals detained in the anti-corruption team’s operation are being investigated for “allegedly having given money to rise in rank in 2021 with the authorization of former President Pedro Castillo.”

After the intervention of the Prosecutor’s Office, the former Minister of Defense involved in the case, Walter Ayala, rejected the search of his home and the arrest of the generals.

“This has been unnecessary, because they haven’t found anything,” Ayala told reporters.
