This is news we weren’t expecting. A new Chinese sci-fi movie got off to a roaring start at the box office this week. In less than 24 hours, The Wandering Earth 2 has garnered nearly $70 million in revenue. A huge sum that could, if the trend continues, allow it to quickly overtake Avatar 2.

As a reminder, James Cameron’s feature film collected, in a little more one month, nearly 240 billion dollars. An astronomical sum which has also made it enter the ranking of the biggest cinematographic successes in history. Thanks to these incredible numbers, James Cameron and his production teams even had confirmed the release from 2024, of the third part of the saga. A film widely acclaimed by the public, but which could be seen already exceeded in terms of revenue. The Wandering Earth II actually arrives at no load and could garner even more revenue thanAvatar 2 from the coming weeks.

In three daysthe Chinese film has grossed over $180 million. The Blockbuster could thus overtake its Hollywood competitor in the days or weeks to come. Lasting almost three hours – just like the second part of Avatar and its 3 hours 18 minutes – The Wandering Earth II however, does not play exactly on the same flat bands as the adventures of the Na’vis.

Post apocalyptic world, dying sun and advanced technology

The Wandering Earth II is the sequel to the first installment released in 2019 – and available on Netflix. Through this film, we follow the adventures of certain heroes trying everything to try to save humanity. The sun being extinguished, Men build giant engines aiming to make the Earth a vessel, in motion, leaving in search of a new star.

If the first film was rather successful, the second part divides spectators and experts. However, keeping the same logic as well as the same traits that had made its strength in 2019, the film should have no trouble satisfying fans of the first opus. Good or not, this second part is indeed likely to fit into the ranking of the most profitable films in history.
