Magistrates from the Timişoara District Court decided on the preventive arrest of a man who, despite having a canceled driver’s license, got behind the wheel of a van, after consuming alcohol. At one point, the passenger on his right fell out of the car, and the one behind the wheel ran over him while reversing. The passenger later died.

“On 19.09.2023, around 8:30 p.m., the defendant drove a van on public roads, from Hodoni township, Timiş county, to Sânandrei commune, and then for a distance of approximately 3-4 km, on the extra-village land outside the roadway of DC 37, the direction of travel from the Hodoni locality to the Sânandrai locality, having canceled the driver’s license and having an alcohol content of over 0.80 g/l of pure alcohol in the blood, and arrived at the extra-village land of the locality Hodoni, in the place called “At the camp”, on a concrete platform, performing the reverse maneuver with the van, passed the wheel from the front right side of the van over the body of the injured person (who had fallen from the van where he was as a passenger the right front spot), causing him several injuries and later his death”, the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Timişoara District Court transmitted, in a press release, on Friday.

The driver of the van is accused of driving a vehicle on public roads by a person who has a canceled driver’s license, driving a vehicle on public roads under the influence of alcohol and manslaughter.

The prosecutor of the case formulated a proposal for preventive arrest for a period of 30 days on behalf of the man, the proposal being accepted by the judge of rights and freedoms of the Timişoara District Court.
