The roughly 177 meter long Almirante Storni was on its way from Söderhamn to Alexandria in Egypt, loaded with timber.

When the ship was anchored at Vinga outside Gothenburg on December 4, 2021, the wood on board suddenly caught fire. No one was injured, but the fire was only extinguished after more than a week.

According to the National Accident Commission, the fire was caused by an extension cable that had been left plugged in during loading.

“The probable cause of the fire is that an arc in the extension cable ignited the timber load,” the accident commission writes in a press release.

At the same time, the commission writes, there are important lessons to be learned from the protracted extinguishing work, which could only be completed after the Almirante Storni had been piloted into the port of Gothenburg a week later.

According to the accident commission, there are reasons to strengthen the handling of ships that need help and therefore recommends, among other things, the government to investigate the issue and take the necessary measures.
