The almost 140-minute fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves caused a stir in the still young cinema year 2023. Of course, one can forget the huge fan base of the pen-and-paper phenomenon, but apart from that the film also knows how to please thanks to many quite “unmodern” and usual elements. Instead of trying to build up several future plots and, ideally, an entire franchise with one film (hello, MCU), you focus on what really counts and arrives on the big screen: delivering a good film.
The famous template not only serves as a plot framework, as is often the case with half-baked and unsatisfactory adaptations (yes, for example Mortal Kombat is meant), it even has a massive influence on the structure and presentation of the fantasy flick. You actually have the feeling of immersing yourself in a D&D campaign, for example when main actor Chris Pine explains his adventure motivation right at the beginning – just as if he were reading his written character sheet. Oh, that’s how loyalty to templates and fan love goes, isn’t it?

D&D: Honor Among Thieves – Really That Good?
Not only in our positive film criticism do we give D&D: Honor among Thieves an excellent certificate, the fantasy film produced by Paramount and Hasbro also gets an excellent rating on various opinion platforms. For example on Rotten Tomatoes, where the blockbuster by the two directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Game Night, Vacation) has a score of 90% (the audience score is even 93%). Of course, there are also several stars and celebrities to admire. About the main character Chris Pine (Wonder Woman, Star Trek) Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and Furious series, Avatar, Alita: Battle Angel) – the secret heart of the fantasy flick -, Regé-Jean Page (The Gray Man, Bridgerton) and Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World 3).
