Steamforged Games is a well-known manufacturer of board games and generally offers high quality in both concepts and components. Although they have several original ideas, more recently they have specialized in creating board games based on video games, including series such as
Dark Souls, Ring of Fire, Gears of War, Monster Hunter World and Resident Evil.
Now they’re hinting at a new project on Twitter (which you can check out below), including an emoji representing a Jolly Roger flag as well as an image of their gear-shaped logo on top of what looks like a treasure map. The latter reveals locations such as Crooked Masts, Old Faithful Isle, Kraken Watchtower and Shipwreck Bay.
All of these are known locations from the vast seas of Rare Sea of Thievesand it becomes even clearer when Steamforge rhetorically asks “what Sea will this journey take us on?” (did you notice the big S in “Sea”?), which suggests sea voyages. In short, we are hardly the only ones who think it is very, very likely that we are talking about an upcoming Sea of Thieves board game.
Sea of Thieves has been available as a board game previously in a Monopoly version available via Rare Store, but this is probably a brand new game rather than a variation of something existing. We are convinced that the Sea of Thieves concept with its open seas, pirates, skeletons, mysterious islands, sea monsters and of course treasures provides a good basis for a board game. We will return when the game is announced and hopefully also be able to deliver a review once it is released.
