The political leader Raphael Esquivelknown as Mbururuwas elected as a national senator this Sunday in the elections in Paraguay, despite being in prison for eight months and facing charges of child sexual abuse and rape of a minor, among other cases.
Mbururu, who ran for National Crusade of the presidential candidate Paraguayan “Payo” Cubas, did not campaign for his imprisonment in the Ciudad del Este regional penitentiary. However, received more than 50 thousand votes and became the second most voted on his list.
Before dedicating himself to politics, Mbururú was a plastic artist. In 2018 he ran unsuccessfully for the Senate by an independent sector.
It is not a surprise of the final stretch of the campaign, since Esquivel was arrested and charged in August last yearaccused of leading and instigating an attack on a property located in Itakyry and of physical and sexual assault on the members of a Paraguayan family of farmers.
The electoral judge Modesto Núñez told the GEN channel that at the time the Mbururú case will be analyzed to determine whether or not he can take office. “One can only stop being a candidate when there is a firm conviction, because innocence is presumed,” he said.
For his part, the Minister of the TSJE, Jorge Bogarín, said at a press conference that the final calculation will be held on May 24 and avoided going into details about the case. “The procedure that the law says is going to be done, I do not want to refer to that yet, because, in addition to administrative functions, as ministers we also have jurisdictional functions, and if I think so, it could be grounds for recusal,” he replied.
In the case of abuse, the alleged victim was taken by her own mother into a motel in the San Miguel neighborhood of Ciudad del EsteDepartment of Alto Paraná, where she was allegedly forced to have sexual relations with the politician.
The young woman was later inspected by the forensic doctor and the result of the examination showed “ancient tear”. Currently, the accused are being held in prison, as confirmed by the Public Ministry.
During the campaign, Payo Cubas had defended the candidate and harangued in his speeches that Mbururú would swear “from jail” and that if his jurisdiction is not removed he would be released.
The party of the controversial candidate that climbed to third place in the presidential election also became the third force of the senatewith five seats, behind the 23 of the ruling Colorado Party and the 12 of the liberal bench of Alianza Senadores por la Patria.
The most voted of the movement was the lawyer Yolanda Paredes, wife of the leader of the National Crusade. His experience is the Human Resources Department of the Municipality of Ciudad del Este. When her husband was removed from the Senate, she judicially tried to occupy her seat despite not being on the list of substitute senators.
