“VWe are going to celebrate the centenary of the birth of José Saramago, in Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain), with two presentations of the show ‘A Passarola'”, said today the actor Pompeu José, one of the directors of Trigo Limpo Teatro ACERT, in a meeting with journalists about the company’s programming.

Pompeu José presented today the quarterly program of the Associação Cultural e Recreativa de Tondela (ACERT), district of Viseu, which is home to the theater company that “continues to always do many things”.

‘A Passarola’ will have two presentations, in two different places, one on June 10th, in Arrecife, capital of Lanzarote, the second, on the 17th, in Varadero de Puerto del Carmen, also on the same island in the region of Las Palmas, Spain.

José Saramago – to date the only Portuguese Nobel laureate in Literature (1998) – was born on November 16, 1922, in Azinhaga, Golegã, district of Santarém, and in 1993 he moved to Tias, in Lanzarote, where he lived until he died, in 2010, aged 87.

“We will have 39 local people to participate, as in the shows in Portugal, and the actors will try to speak in Spanish, but in a joke, as we already did with the ‘elephant show’ (‘The Elephant’s Journey’)”, also inspired by the work of the writer, he specified.

This person in charge, who shares the company’s artistic direction with José Rui Martins, recalled that ‘A Passarola’ is produced by a group that “does not have many means, but wants to put on a great show, wants to fly and, for that, makes an effort additional”.

“That is, he will speak in Spanish, but the public will understand, even as a joke, that sometimes he cannot and, possibly, he will have the help of one or another who will intervene, in order to make it a healthy joke”, he said.

In this sense, he said that the piece inspired by ‘Memorial do Convento’ was “translated based on the translation of the book in Spain, that is, the text is correct, but will also have, like the Portuguese version, situations of irony”.

“The show always appeals to that, to demonstrate that José Saramago is a lot of fun”, defended Pompeu José, who recalled the passage in the book, of the king wanting to build the convent “as he describes it and how it is produced” in the play .

Pompeu José added that there had already been “a technical visit” to the two places in Lanzarote, where ‘A Passarola’ will be presented and, in May, they will return to the place “to meet with the participants and start working” on the play.

For this show, accounted Pompeu José, in addition to the 39 local participants, will, from Tondela, “nine actors, five musicians, three technicians and some production support, close to 20” people.

“Whoever is going to participate should stay away for 20 days, taking into account that there is no boat every day, because we have to take two vans with all the necessary material, the scenery and the costumes. And I also want to go”, concluded Pompeu José.
