Washington, May 5 (EFE).- More than 11.8 million Hispanic voters voted in the 2022 midterm elections, an unprecedented number, according to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).

The report, which was based on figures from the Census Bureau, shows that almost one in 10 voters in 2022 was Latino.

That community “once again turned out to vote in unprecedented numbers, continuing the momentum of mass participation in 2018,” the organization stressed.

“Despite these numbers, there is still work to be done to mobilize the community during the election season and beyond,” said a NALEO statement.

In the 2022 elections, more than 52% of citizens in general qualified to vote turned out to do so, the second highest participation in two decades after that registered in 2018.

That participation was just 1.2 percentage points less than that registered in 2018, but it was “significantly” higher than that of 2014 (41.9%) and that of 2010 (45.5%), according to the Census.

Among Hispanic citizens eligible to vote but who did not turn up, 30.5% cited a schedule conflict due to work or school as an excuse, and 17.9% indicated that they were not interested in voting or did not believe that voting It makes a difference.

NALEO noted that with the start of another election cycle approaching, he has invited President Joe Biden and the leading Republican Party presidential candidates to the organization’s annual conference this summer in New York.
