A stroke left him bedridden; his mother requests a humanitarian visa to say goodbye

MODESTO, California – Last Friday the lives of the Martinez family changed forever. A stroke left Edgardo bedridden and unable to see his mother again, whom he left behind 20 years ago when she left Jalisco, Mexico.

Edgardo was in charge of his restaurant Frida’s Ajua in Modesto when he began to feel bad. According to her brother Orlando, “he woke up, hugged her husband Nicolás, lay on her chest, and fell asleep on her chest. Then he began to snore and Nicolós gave him the first help”.

After a while I talk to my sister. “You know she’s not breathing,” she said.

It was then that he was rushed to a hospital where they were given the news. Edgardo had suffered a stroke and there was nothing to do for him anymore. They decided to donate his organs, but first, fulfill his dream of reuniting with his mother whom he hasn’t seen for 20 years.

“He had promised my mother the song by Diego Verdaguer, I will return, he said, I am going to return and he did not return.”

Orlando says that she hoped to arrange paperwork through her husband, but with the pandemic, everything took a while. She remembers that she asked Nicolás that if he died he would take care of his mother. “I want you to take care of her, she told him, I want to see my mom.”

Edgardo and Orlando’s mother lives in Mexico and wants to cross the border to say goodbye to her son. However, she arrived with the border authorities to be allowed her entry and was denied.

Héctor Peralta of the Mexican consulate in Sacramento, explains that the decision to give permission to the mother is at the discretion of the US immigration authorities.

“When we found out, the lady was already at the border with this letter and we learned that the US authorities had not granted her entry,” says Peralta, who also clarifies that the consulate can only provide information.

“The Mexican consulate does not give the permits, this is done by the immigration authorities and if they show up under certain conditions they analyze the case and give them a parole that allows them temporary entry into the United States,” the consul pointed out. attach.

The doctors said they will disconnect Edgardo on Thursday, so his mother, Mrs. Teresa, is still hoping to get him to say goodbye in person.
