According to the 2021 Cancer Barometer, the rate of women declaring that they are up to date with breast cancer screening by mammography has fallen by 18.7 points since 2010.

Worrying figures. The 2021 Cancer Barometer, published this Monday by Public Health France and the National Cancer Institute, points out that the screening rates declared in France “remain below the objectives set at European level” for several types of cancer, including breast cancer. .

If the majority (68.8%) of women aged 50 to 74 say they are up to date with breast cancer screening by mammography, it is “18.7 points less than in 2010.” As for men, only 33.4% of those aged over 50 said they had already undergone a screening examination for prostate cancer. In 2010, this proportion was higher by 18.2 points.

In addition, “only 43% of people aged 50 to 74 said they were up to date with their colorectal cancer screening”, points out the report.

“A continuous and significant decline”

“Perceptions relating to the state of health and the risk of cancer, age or even tobacco consumption; marital and family situation also influences the performance of screenings”, explains Public Health France and the National Institute of cancer in this barometer, carried out every five years.

The trend is “worrying, marked by a continuous and significant decline in the declaration of participation in organized screening programs”, SPF alert.

Especially since, the organizations point out, “although it varies from one screening to another, the effectiveness of screening in terms of cancer prevention is established.”

The ten-year strategy for the fight against cancer sets the ambitious objective of carrying out one million additional screenings by 2025 and proposes measures to simplify access to them.
