After an accident, the A40 in Essen was completely closed on Sunday (May 7) in the direction of Dortmund. A mile-long traffic jam formed.

After a rear-end collision, the A40 in Essen was completely closed for almost an hour and a half in the direction of Dortmund on Sunday afternoon (May 7). An almost four-kilometer traffic jam formed as far as Mülheim-Heißen. At 4 p.m. the road was free again, according to a spokeswoman for the Düsseldorf motorway police.

At first there was a small traffic jam, which resulted in an accident involving several vehicles. “A typical traffic jam accident,” it said. Several vehicles were involved in the collision at 2:34 p.m. at the Holsterhausen junction. The A40 was completely closed in the direction of Dortmund.

Emergency services and the Essen fire brigade took care of the injured. Five people, including a child, were slightly to moderately injured and had to be transported to the shock rooms of various hospitals in Essen, it said.

The Essen fire brigade was on duty for over an hour with four ambulances, two emergency doctors, the head emergency doctor and five fire engines. The cause of the accident is unclear, the police are investigating.
