The 20th and arguably final season of “ Germany is looking for the superstar (DSDS)“ has been running on German TV since January 14th.
After that it’s over! In July 2022, it was announced that the show would be discontinued in 2023.
What is the “DSDS” anniversary season about?
“Deutschland sucht den Superstar” is a classic talent show and German offshoot of the British show “Pop Idol”. “DSDS” was shown for the first time on November 9, 2002 on RTL.
- Traditionally, the winner gets a record deal. In seasons 8-14 there was a prize money of 500,000 euros. Since season 15 it has only been 100,000 euros.
- Also: The winner of the 2023 season should go on a tour. And as a support act by Dieter Bohlen. The official tour start is April 16th.
These are the processes and rules at “DSDS”
In this talent competition, one singer per season (once a year) is determined as the winner through auditions.
- First, candidates are selected through castings and applications. They present themselves to the jury and, depending on their performance, come to the next “recall” or are eliminated. The remaining candidates appear in the subsequent programs, the so-called “live shows”.
- The jury judges each participant after each performance.
- Singing and presence are judged.
- From the live shows onwards, the viewers also decide on the progress, the participants and the eventual winner: by telephone voting, by SMS and via the Internet
Up until the final, the participants with the fewest votes are eliminated. The result of the vote will be announced the same evening.

What became of the previous “DSDS” winners?
Most make music. For some, the casting show was even the start of a successful career.
