Significant traffic delays occurred on Tuesday, December 27, in Gelsenkirchen after an accident involving a hit-and-run driver. Heavy equipment had to be requested.
Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse in Gelsenkirchen closed for over an hour for salvage
On Tuesday around 7.30 p.m. on the Berlin bridge on Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse in the direction of the city centre, a gray Audi with a Gütersloh license plate crashed into the curb, then landed on the tram track bed and came to a transverse stop. An unidentified man and his companion then fled the vehicle.

The accident vehicle was lifted off the track bed with a specially requested crane and secured. Property damage was caused to both the vehicle and the track bed. According to the police, Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse had to be completely closed in the north for “over an hour” for the duration of the accident recording and recovery of the car and “broken parts”, oncoming traffic was temporarily affected. Rail traffic also had to be suspended during this time.
According to witnesses, the two volatile inmates were around 35 years old, and the man wore light-colored sweatpants.
