At least four people have died in an avalanche in the French Alps near Chamonix. According to initial findings, several people were also injured, wrote France’s Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on Twitter on Sunday afternoon.

The rescue work is still in progress. According to Darmanin, the avalanche fell around noon on the Armancette glacier near Mont Blanc on the French-Italian border. Darmanin thanked the rescue workers. He commemorates the victims and their families.

The Mont Blanc (also written Mont Blanc, Italian Monte Bianco, in German “White Mountain”) is the highest mountain in the Alps at 4807 meters.

In the north of Mont Blanc lies the valley of the Arve with the tourist center of Chamonix. This place is also one of the main bases for climbing the mountain. Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Les Houches are two other important starting points for tours on Mont Blanc in the north-west, while the Italian town of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley is in the south-east.
