Who doesn’t know them, the eternal discussions about characters in video games: Is Joel from The Last of Us the toughest survivor or is it Lara Croft from Tomb Raider? Is Mario or Sonic the more iconic character? And which Pokemon is actually the best? All of these questions provide insight into which video game characters are personally important to you and which characters from your favorite games you identify with the most. But have you ever asked yourself which video game characters are objectively and scientifically proven to be the most popular in the world? If so, a new study could now shed some light on it. “Currys” has examined which video game characters are the most popular worldwide, measured by the search volume on Google or Instagram, for example. And there are some expected figures and some surprises!
Pikachu and Super Mario are not #1!
When asked which video game character is the most popular worldwide, many would probably first think of the really big names: Pikachu from Pokemon, Super Mario or Kratos from God of War. But the first place in the world’s most popular video game characters has been snuck up by what used to be our favorite plumber Mario’s biggest competitor: Sonic The Hedgedog has climbed to first place with a search volume of 6.7 million per month and around 3.2 million Instagram posts.
But then the usual suspects follow: Pikachu comes in second with a search volume of 3.7 million, followed by Pac-Man with 3 million searches per month. All other places look like this:
– 4th place: Super Mario, 2.1 million searches
– 5th place: Big Boss (Metal Gear), 712,000 searches
– 6th place: Luigi, 641,000 searches
– 7th place: Lara Croft, 607,000 searches
– 8th place: Kratos, 571,000 searches
– 9th place: Yoshi, 556,000 searches
– 10th place: Diablo, 490,000 searches
Other popular characters are also represented
The study was not only about video game characters, but also examined characters from the film and television world. For example, Joker wins the race for the most popular superhero, just behind Spider-Man and Black Panther. Biggest sitcom stars include Mr Bean, Ross Geller and Rachel Green.
And in the race for the biggest horror icons, Pennywise from IT wins just ahead of Chucky the horror doll and Jigsaw. We have linked a list of all winners below.
