The Federal Ministry of the Interior reacted cautiously to the initiative by Berlin’s Social Senator Katja Kipping (left) to relax the residence requirement for refugees. However, it refers to the existing possibility of a change under certain circumstances.
“Basically, in view of the current accommodation situation, the idea of making it easier for those seeking protection to take up private residence in the area of another foreigners authority is understandable,” said a ministry spokeswoman on Sunday.
But that would ignore the responsibility for services, health and school. However, it is already possible today to take up residence in the area of another foreigners authority under certain circumstances by mutual agreement.
Kipping had asked Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) to allow the condition to be relaxed if someone moves from a city with a tight housing market like Berlin to an area with vacancies. She cited Brandenburg as an example. The background is that Berlin is taking in more refugees than it has to take in after the nationwide division.
The “Berliner Morgenpost” reported on it on Thursday. Refugees must reside in the country to which they were assigned for the asylum procedure for the first three years after the residence permit has been recognized or issued. (dpa)
