Microsoft wants to take over Activision-Blizzard, Sony wants to prevent that and the cartel authorities are taking a closer and critical look at the whole thing. This is the starting point for a legal dispute that will certainly continue to escalate in the coming weeks.

Because the Redmond company has tried in recent months to solve the matter diplomatically and in a way in friendship. The authorities and competitors have been repeatedly assured that a takeover will not have any significant consequences for other platforms. The central bone of contention was and is Call of Duty, where Microsoft has repeatedly assured that the shooter will be available for the PlayStation for many years to come.

But Sony didn’t go far enough with Microsoft’s promises, and the Japanese company probably doesn’t care about that at all – it’s just about preventing the deal. This is probably also the reason why Microsoft is now apparently changing its strategy. Because they shoot back sharply and demanded that Sony release information about the upcoming releases from the PlayStation manufacturer.

Gaming journalist Stephen Totilo tweeted documents confirming that “Microsoft has subpoenaed Sony Interactive Entertainment to defend against an FTC lawsuit against the (Microsoft) bid for Activision.” Sony now has until January 27, 2023 to comply with, object to, or respond to this subpoena.

Are you talking about exclusive games from Sony?

It is not known exactly what information and details Microsoft is asking Sony to do, but it appears to be about Sony’s “production capacities”. What exactly is behind it is unclear, but one can certainly speculate that Microsoft is taking up the topic of exclusivity.

Because Sony complained about the possible exclusivity of games from Activision Blizzard in the course of the takeover, but is itself known for a whole range of exclusive titles. It is therefore conceivable that the Redmond company will take up this argument and deepen it – and would like to know how much and what exclusive content the competitor is preparing.
