In April, the Lichtenberger district thaler goes to two employees of the “Käthe Kern” care facility on Woldegker Straße for their selfless work during a fire in the facility on the morning of March 27, 2023.
The nurses on duty, Jean Kube and Frank van der Brelie, had rescued the residents of the home, sometimes at risk to their own health. This has now been recognized with the award of the district thaler.
20 other employees of the care facility, who were also involved in the rescue operation and care for the residents during the fire, received a certificate of commendation from the Lichtenberg district office.
Despite all efforts, two people died in the fire from smoke inhalation. “It is only thanks to the selfless commitment of the nursing staff that there were no other victims to complain about,” said the district office. “Both the home management and the employees have acted in an exemplary manner to prevent worse things from happening. With the award of the district thaler and the commendations, we would like to express our thanks.”
