The far-left party split into two in mid-December due to internal disagreements. The former presidential candidate wants to “rebuild a radical left”.

A split and a recomposition? Philippe Poutou, former presidential candidate and historic figure of the New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA) calls this Saturday in Release to rebuild a “wider and more open” movement, after the far left party split after its fifth Congress in mid-December.

“We want to rebuild a radical left. We need a larger, more open party,” he proclaimed in a daily interview.

He claims in particular to want to give new impetus to a party “which gets involved in what is happening in the anti-liberal left, on the side of La France insoumise in particular”, with which he says “to find himself on many subjects”.

“It couldn’t last any longer”

The former presidential candidate returns to the announcement of the split in his party less than a month earlier, ensuring that the decision had become essential.

“The situation was untenable. Internally, the crisis had been simmering for a long time (…) It could not last any longer,” he says.

According to him, two irreconcilable currents were facing each other within the far left party and were opposed, among other things, on “the electoral question” or “the war in Ukraine”.

No application for 2027

Despite this political project, Philippe Poutou also assures that he does not want to run again for the presidential election. “It would not be reasonable”, he believes, saying he is in favor of a “broad candidacy” on the left, in order to avoid a dispersion of votes in 2027.

LFI plans to take to the streets again on January 21 against the pension reform, in which Philippe Poutou intends to participate.
