In Ethiopia, after a two-year civil war, rebels have begun surrendering their weapons. The spokesman for the local authorities in Tigray Province, Getachew Reda, confirmed on Twitter on Wednesday night that this was “part of the promise” made in November when a peace agreement was concluded.

The disarmament of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front is considered the next major milestone in the Ethiopian peace process. According to media reports, independent observers confirmed the handover of weapons. “We hope that this will help accelerate the implementation of the agreement,” Getachew said.

In early November, the Tigray authorities signed a peace agreement with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. The two armies fought each other for two years in a civil war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions.

The peace treaty, which was negotiated in South Africa’s capital Pretoria, provides for a ceasefire, the end of a humanitarian blockade and the release of blocked power and communication lines. (KNA)
