For several years now, rumors have swirled that Nintendo had plans to release remastered versions of the Metroid Prime games. On Wednesday evening we learned that the first game in the trilogy has now been refurbished – and is already here.

Metroid Prime Remastered will be released on the Nintendo eShop on the night of Thursday, and will get its own physical version on February 22.

You can see a trailer above.

New control options

The revamped version has support for several different control methods: one similar to the one the game had when it launched on the GameCube in 2003, as well as a new variant where you use both analog sticks on the Switch controllers – in other words, something more reminiscent of what we’re used to to in modern shooters.

In addition, we see that the graphics have been tweaked a bit, and have support for widescreen – something that was only available on the version that was released for the Nintendo Wii previously.

Nintendo gave no indication of whether it plans to revamp the two sequels to Metroid Prime.

Metroid Prime was praised when it was released here in Europe in 2003. We at Gamer.no actually had a review of the game at the time, and gave it a top score.

– If there should be any doubt, it is enough to state that Metroid Prime hits on almost every single point. It’s a hodgepodge of experiences and graphical extravaganza that’s going to give you serious grins should you play it for a long time. Right now, Metroid Prime is king of the game in the GameCube world, and demands all the attention we can give it. And a little more, we wrote about the game 20 years ago.

The newest entry in the Metroid series came a couple of years ago, and was also praised by us. Read our Metroid Dread review »
