Another 1.1 million euros after closing the accounts: The joint charity campaign “The West helps. Together against hunger in the world” ends after the grand finale at the end of December with an impressive donation sum of 10.6 million euros. Together with the WDR, the alliance “Aktion Deutschland Hilft” called for donations against global hunger in a cross-media campaign and received a strong response.
Of the more than 10.6 million euros in donations, the “WDR 2 Christmas miracle. Your song helps” achieved the largest share of 7.4 million euros in donations. From December 18th to 22nd, the moderators Steffi Neu, Sabine Heinrich, Jan Malte Andresen and Thomas Bug broadcast live around the clock from a glass studio in Dortmund and received numerous prominent guests and collected donations. In addition, listeners and viewers could request song titles in return for a donation. Many people donated especially for the need in Africa, Ukraine, as well as Yemen, South Asia and Afghanistan. “The charity campaign is not only unforgettable because of the many contributions from WDR or the WDR 2 Christmas miracle, but especially because of the many creative, inspiring and moving donations,” says Roßbach.
The WDR 2 moderators and the employees of the alliance at the glass house and donation stand in Dortmund were visited by chimney sweeps who had collected and handed over the donation with tails and top hats. The carpentry trade NRW had also made kits for nesting boxes and donated the proceeds from the boxes. Many other encounters also remain unforgotten: Some visitors donated souvenirs of their recently deceased parents, siblings and friends. Including a team of friends who had donated the common Skat box after the loss of one of their members.
“We are deeply impressed by the incredible response. The people in Germany and especially in North Rhine-Westphalia have shown that they keep an eye on the emergencies in the world. We are very grateful for that. Last but not least, the WDR and the WDR 2: The journalists gave the millions of starving people in their precarious situation a voice and presented the topic in a tangible and sustainable way,” says Manuela Roßbach, Executive Director of “Aktion Deutschland Hilft”. With the donations, the organizations in the alliance are now providing humanitarian aid in a good 50 projects.
