A Play Store it will be full of functions with artificial intelligence to help you find interesting apps there. During Google I/O 2023, the Search Giant presented tools powered by generative AI that will serve to summarize user reviews and even create app descriptions with more efficiency and practicality.

Description of apps by AI

Conversational AIs like ChatGPT and the new Bing are all the rage right now and can do more than answer questions: on the Play Store, developers will be able to use the PaLM 2 model to generate elaborate, well-written app descriptions to attract new users.

The solution will be available in the Developer Console and saves programmers without so much writing skills from resorting to third-party services to fulfill the task. Logically, all AI-generated text can (and should) be reviewed by the app author, so the result still has a human touch.

Analysis summaries

Popular apps can accumulate thousands of user reviews and it’s impossible to check every one of them. Google is looking to make this query easier by using AI to capture the top topics mentioned by the public.

In one example, the company showed the tool highlighting comments about a game. The result is quick sentences that give an idea of what the app offers and, next to it, the Play Store shows in how many comments that was mentioned. Initially, this function will be exclusive to reviews in English.

app translation

The Play Store already translates app titles and descriptions automatically, but the result is sometimes quite literal (and incorrect). In the future, the Play Store will use AI to translate apps and bring them to more audiences and regions without requiring more developer effort.

The tool, available on the Play Console, supports ten languages and is completely free.

Other news

Google’s app store also wants developers to be able to better demonstrate what each app offers, including in-service purchases. Soon, the dedicated programs page will include “featured products”, a section that collects products sold within the application.

These and other Play Store additions will be rolled out gradually. Most of them are aimed at developers, but consumers should also benefit indirectly from the additions, after all they will be able to enjoy more accurate descriptions and also updates created based on the evaluations made in the Android store.
