Midwest City, Oklahoma.- A man shot and killed another man today at Oklahoma’s Rose State College, according to police, who reported no other victims.

Midwest City Police Chief Sid Porter said the men “knew each other through a domestic situation,” but did not elaborate on exactly what their relationship was or what led up to the incident. He also did not say if either of them was a student or worked at the university.

The campus was briefly closed.

The university has about 13,000 students and is located on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. After the incident, there was police tape around the liberal arts building in the center of campus, and several police officers were on the scene.

Porter said the victim was shot and the suspect was confronted by officers working on campus.

“They ordered him to drop the gun, which he did, and then they took him into custody,” Porter said.

Student Kevin McCormack said he was staying with a friend on campus when he heard the shots. He commented that they looked out and saw a man lying on the ground, along with another who was holding a gun and a woman who was trying to calm him down.

“Almost immediately we were like, ‘Go, go, go!’ and we went from there,” McCormack recounted.

The university canceled classes for the rest of the day after lifting the lockdown. A person who answered the phone for the university’s public safety office on Monday referred questions to police.

Porter praised the students and staff for how they responded during the lockdown, noting that in the weeks before the incident, the university had held a shooting drill.

“I think they did a fantastic job listening to the school and everyone stayed calm and didn’t panic because we didn’t know what was going on,” Porter said.
