The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has invited the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, to visit the White House in July. According to the statement of the US presidency: “Joe Biden spoke today with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, within the framework of their close coordination with key allies and partners following the recent events in Russia. The leaders affirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine. They have also coordinated the preparations for the next NATO Summit and have discussed the latest developments in North Africa. President Biden invited Prime Minister Meloni to visit the White House in July“.

The White House has explained that the US president continues his round of calls to allies to discuss the latest events in Russia following the Wagner Group mutiny. In this sense, the Italian Government has pointed out in its note the possible repercussions of this revolt about the presence of these mercenaries in Africa.

The two countries share “unwavering support” for Ukraine, although Biden also raised Meloni issues relating to the Mediterranean, the European Union and the “stability of Africa“. Both leaders also reaffirmed the “deep bilateral ties” and the “unity” of NATO, with an eye already set on the summit of heads of state and government that will take place in Vilnius.

Biden has maintained a round of contacts with allied countries in recent days that included, among other calls, one to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. Meloni, in fact, is the last G7 leader with whom he has spoken.
