President Alberto Fernández spoke this Sunday in relation to the protests taking place in Brazil, where a group of Jair Bolsonaro supporters stormed and destroyed the facilities of the neighboring country’s Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches. Also the Argentine Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, repudiated what is happening in the neighboring country.

“Democracy is the only political system that guarantees freedoms and obliges us to respect the popular verdict,” said the Argentine President in what was the opening of a thread of tweets in reference to what happened in Brasilia.

The president went on to indicate that “those who try to ignore the will of the majorities threaten democracy and deserve not only the corresponding legal sanction, but also the absolute rejection of the international community.” To then express his “repudiation of what is happening in Brasilia. My unconditional support and that of the Argentine people to @LulaOficial in the face of this coup attempt that he is facing.”

Then Fernández indicated that “as president of #CELAC and #MERCOSUR, I alert the member countries so that we unite in this unacceptable anti-democratic reaction that is trying to impose itself in Brazil.” And he called on his peers to demonstrate “firmly and unitedly our total adherence to the government democratically elected by the Brazilians headed by President @LulaOficial”

Finally, he indicated that “we are together with the Brazilian people to defend democracy and not allow #NuncaMás the return of the coup ghosts promoted by the right.”

This Sunday afternoon, supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress and the Executive Branch building, causing serious damage. There are protesters also in the Supreme Court building. The authorities of the neighboring country speak of an attempted attack on democracy by the protesters.

For his part, the Argentine Economy Minister, Sergio Massa, also referred to what is happening in the neighboring country. Massa, in his Twitter social network account, repudiated “Strongly acts of violence and the assault on democratic institutions in Brazil. Acts like these threaten democracy and the popular will. My full support for @LulaOficial and my solidarity with the government and the Brazilian people.”
