The New Year is synonymous with joy and celebration, but during this festive event we can note various facts related to violence, in particular attacks.

Ireland was the victim of an event, which risks marking the population but especially the five victims who were attacked on New Year’s Day.

According to The Irish Examiner, a 27-year-old Algerian appeared in Tralee District Court in south-west Ireland. The man named Mr. Mekhazni was accused of having caused trouble but also of having stabbed five people. The incident took place on New Year’s Eve at the Killarney Hotel, where the suspect was staying, Kerry Radio reported. It was only this Wednesday, January 18, 2023 that the hearing took place.

The Algerian heard by the justice is placed in pre-trial detention

First, in order to contextualize it should be known that the five people attacked by the man were all affected, according to Sergeant Hennessy, who testified before the judge. Then, it should be noted that these injuries are no less and that the suspect did not go to any lengths. Indeed, one of the victims ends up with a partially amputated finger, in addition to other blows received on the hand and leg.

Although the Algerian’s lawyer has requested bail, he remains in pre-trial detention for the time being. Brendan Ahern, said barrister explains that “his client’s bail application was before the High Court tomorrow, and the answer will depend on his background check of the suspect”.

The authorities felt that the case should be dealt with by another court because the charges were far too heavy. The man will be brought before justice again at the Tralee court in ten days, more precisely on February 1, 2023. He will then have to be heard in Killarney a week later.
