Netherlands grants euthanasia to a 29-year-old girl

A court in the Netherlands has granted euthanasia to Zoraya ter Beek, a 29-year-old girl who requested it because she was suffering from depression since his childhood. Ter Beek received final approval last week to undergo assisted dying, a legal practice in the Netherlands since 2002.

According to The Guardianthe young woman has chronic depression, anxiety, trauma, unspecified personality disorder, and autism. She has undergone several therapies, but none of them have given the expected results. More than 30 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), something that did not solve the main problems.

In therapy I learned a lot about my coping mechanisms, but it didn’t solve the main problems. At the beginning of treatment, you start with hope. I thought it would get better. But the longer the treatment lasts, you start to lose hopeexplains the young woman to the aforementioned media.

Ter Beek even thought about suicide, but remembers that, when a classmate took his own life when she was little, she saw how it affected the boy’s family, and she ruled out causing the same thing to her loved ones. Therefore, she began to study the option of euthanasia.

I finished ECT in August 2020, and after a period of accepting that there was no further treatment, I requested assisted dying in December of that year. It is a long and complicated process. It’s not that you ask for assisted death on a Monday and you’re dead on Friday.points out the young woman.

I spent a long time on the waiting list for an evaluation, because there are very few doctors willing to participate in assisted dying of people with mental suffering. Then a team must evaluate ithave a second opinion on your eligibility and your decision should be reviewed by another independent doctor.

Ter Beek, who has a family, partner and friends, says she has felt scared at some point, but she has always been absolutely determined to continue with the euthanasia process. Every doctor at every stage says: Are you sure? You can stop at any timepoints out the young woman.
