This is the first time in the history of the United States that a former president of the Government faces criminal charges. Of the 91 previously subpoenaed, 13 were announced Monday night after a Georgia grand jury indicted him for an alleged attempted manipulation of results of the 2020 election in that state, where Democrat Joe Biden won by a narrow margin.

The origin of this accusation goes back to a telephone call that Donald Trump had with the Secretary of State of Georgia, brad raffenspergerafter the 2020 presidential elections, in which the former president allegedly asked him to “seek” the votes that were necessary to annul Biden’s victory in the state.

For this accusation, which he shares with 18 other people, the former president faces 13 charges, including requesting a public official to violate his oath or conspiring to impersonate an official. Among the defendants are his former chief of staff, Mark Meadowsand his former personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.

Also, the Fulton County District Attorney, fanny willishas used against Trump a special law against organized crime –called RICO for its acronym in English–, which has been used previously to convict mafia bosses such as John Gotti.

With that law in hand, Willis has managed to weave together the crimes committed by Trump and his allies, amalgamating them into a unique narrative in which the former president emerges as the leader of an organization with the shared criminal purpose of reversing the election results in Georgia.

This method allows the Prosecutor’s Office to condemn those leaders who order others to commit crimes for them.

Of the 13 state charges that Trump is accused of in Georgia, only one has to do with that mob law, but it could be one of the most serious since he is punishable with up to 20 years in prison.
