US and UN condemn Russian attacks on Ukrainian grain warehouses near the Danube river

MADRID, 17 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

US State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel has condemned recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian grain warehouses located on the banks of the Danube River, on the border with Romania.

“The United States condemns the continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian grain infrastructure and calls on Russia for an immediate return to the grain deal. Today we learned of multiple Russian drone strikes that have damaged warehouses and granaries in Ukrainian ports on the Danube (. ..) prior to the shelling of ports in Odessa, Reni and Izmail,” Patel said during a press conference.

“This escalation shows that Moscow continues to prevent grain and food from reaching those who need it most around the world. It is unacceptable. Putin does not care about global food security,” added Patel.

In this sense, he has pointed out that these actions also negatively affect Ukrainian farmers and those of the rest of the planet, which have caused the destruction of a quarter of arable land in Ukraine.

Regarding the Danube river, Patel has assured that it is a “potential option” to replace the Black Sea route and continue allowing Ukrainian grain to leave abroad.

For his part, the deputy spokesman for the UN secretary, Farhan Haq, has expressed concern about the destruction of Ukrainian grain stores.
