Matías Almeyda became Greek Super League champion as coach of AEK Athens, who thrashed Volos 4-0 to win the title. The Athenian team reached a cumulative score of 83 points, clearly taking off Panathinaikos, which drew 1-1 with Aris Thessaloniki.
AEK Athens, which had the help of Sergio Araujo (formerly Boca and Tigre) from Neuquén during the season, won yesterday with goals scored by the Swiss Steven Zuber, the Serbian Mijat Gacinovic, the Mexican Orbelín Pineda and the Polish Damian Szymanski.
The “Pelado” took over the leadership of the new champion in May 2022, who in this contest recorded 26 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses.
The former DT of River and Banfield is the second Argentine coach to become a Greek soccer champion, after Juan Ramón Rocha (former Boca player), who led Panathinaikos to titles (where he also stood out as a soccer player) in the 1994 tournaments and 1995.
Daniel Mancini (formerly Newell’s) from Cordoba and Sebastián Palacios (formerly Independiente) from Tucumán were starters at Panathinaikos, which matched and squandered the few chances of crowning it had. At Aris Salónica, meanwhile, midfielder Mateo García (former Institute) entered the second stage.
