Ambassador visits American reporter detained in Russia

The last time Ambassador Lynne Tracy visited Gerhkovich was in April. The US embassy confirmed the visit on Monday but gave no further information.

Gerhkovich, 31, was arrested in Yekaterinburg while doing news coverage in Russia. A Moscow court last week upheld an order to keep him in custody until August 30.

Both Gershkovich and the Journal deny the charges, and the US government considers him an illegally detained prisoner. His arrest has alarmed the press in Russia, whose authorities have produced no evidence that Gershkovich was a spy.

Gershkovich is confined in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, notorious for its inhospitable conditions.

He is the first American journalist to be charged with espionage in Russia since September 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a correspondent for US News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. Daniloff was freed 20 days later in an exchange for an employee of the Soviet mission to the UN, who had been detained by the FBI, also on espionage charges.
