American nurse and her daughter are kidnapped in Haiti amid wave of violence in the country

A New Hampshire woman and her daughter were reportedly kidnapped while working for a non-profit organization in Haiti, country that has been marked by an increase in violence.

Alix Dorsainvil, a nurse, and her daughter, who has not been identified, were reported kidnapped on Thursday, according to the El Roi Haiti organization, where the woman works, in a statement on Saturday.

“Alix is a deeply compassionate and loving person who considers Haiti her home and the Haitian people her friends and family”reported El Roi president and co-founder Jason Brown. “Alix has worked tirelessly as our school and community nurse to bring relief to those who are hurting as she loves and serves the people of Haiti in Jesus name.”

Dorsainvil, who is from Middletyon, New Hampshire, attended Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, has a program to support nursing education in Haiti, WMUR-TV noted.

“It doesn’t surprise me that Alex decided to get involved in this kind of service work”, said the president of Regis College, Toni Hays, to the aforementioned medium. “She was amazing. She was passionate, she was compassionate.”

The recent kidnapping came after the State Department issued a “do not travel” warning to the country last Thursday, ordering non-emergency personnel to leave the Caribbean nation amid safety concerns.

A spokesman for the department specified this Saturday that he is aware of reports of the kidnapping of the two US citizens from Haiti.

“We are in regular contact with the Haitian authorities and will continue to work with them and our interagency partners in the US government,” the spokesperson added.

In Thursday’s notice, the department noted that kidnapping is widespread, and victims regularly include US citizens, noting that kidnappings often involve ransom negotiationsand commonly the victims receive physical harm.

At the beginning of the month, the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights issued a report warning of the increase in murders and kidnappings in Haiti.
