Tiktok is under serious pressure in large parts of the Western world after accusations that the app was collecting data for the Chinese state. But it is the US that is the most fervent in its criticism of the social media app – bans at various levels of authority already exist and a couple of weeks ago the company’s CEO got answer questions in Congress.

Now, another heavy blow to the app may be imminent. Legislators in Montana on Friday voted through a proposal that would mean a total ban on the use of Tiktok within the state’s borders. It reports CNN. The vote should have ended 54 – 43 in favor of a ban on the app.

If Montana Governor Greg Gianforte were to sign the submitted bill into law, it would take effect next January. Tiktok has unsurprisingly opposed the proposal and indicated it is prepared to take legal action.

Even the American interest group Netchoice, which generally advocates lighter regulation of internet use, has spoken out critically about the proposal. To CNN, the organization’s deputy director, Carl Szabo, says that the United States is embarking on a dangerous path if it starts banning apps and services all too arbitrarily.
