Apple has made iOS 16.3, macOS 13.2 Ventura and iPadOS 16.3 available for download. The updates can be loaded via the integrated software update on iPhones, iPads and Macs. At the same time, the manufacturer has released watchOS 9.3, tvOS 16.3 and the HomePod software in version 16.3.

With iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2, Apple unlocks the (optional) extended end-to-end encryption for iCloud services in Germany and other countries. Apple calls the feature “Extended Privacy”. Once activated, this also protects iCloud backups, iCloud photos and ultimately also iMessage better for the first time, because Apple no longer has a second key. Users must set up a recovery contact or recovery key and update all devices associated with the Apple ID. It will also be possible to secure your own Apple ID using a hardware security key – the latter then serves as a second factor.

Now also outside the USA: Apple’s extended data protection for iCloud.

To reduce false alarms, Apple has slightly changed the emergency SOS function: you have to press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons and then release them after the countdown to make the emergency call. Also new is a Unity wallpaper in iOS 16.3 for Black History Month and a new watch face for the Apple Watch (with watchOS 9.3).

The updates are also expected to fix bugs, including an issue that caused the iPhone lock screen wallpaper to appear virtually black. According to Apple, communication difficulties with music requests addressed to Siri in the CarPlay car have also been resolved. Status information from smart home devices could be displayed differently on the lock screen than in the home app, the manufacturer notes – this bug has also been fixed. iPhone 14 Pro Max users should no longer see horizontal stripes when waking up the device. iOS 16.3 is also a requirement for the new HomePod 2.

The HomePods receive a number of new smart home functions with the update, which activates the previously functionless hidden room climate sensor on the HomePod mini. Also new are functions in interaction with Siri, including the option of creating automations by voice command and the location of people via “Where is?” query. First-generation HomePods are said to play back spoken content in an optimized form.

iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 should again eliminate a number of security gaps, details are expected to follow later in the evening. All patches only receive the latest versions of the operating systems, the manufacturer recently emphasized.
