Mexico City.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador received relatives of Julian Assange at the National Palace, whom he again considered a political prisoner.

Through Twitter, the President insisted that Assange’s imprisonment is an insult to freedom of expression, for which, he announced, he will continue to defend him.

“I received John and Gabriel Shipton, father and brother, respectively, of Julian Assange, whom we will continue to defend,” he said.

“Well, he is a political prisoner and his case is an unacceptable insult to freedom of expression,” López Obrador added on his social network.

López Obrador has advocated for the programmer and founder of WikiLeaks for several years, and has even called for the United States to pardon him.

In December 2020, López Obrador told his then US counterpart, Donald Trump, that Mexico is willing to grant Assange asylum.

Last year, the President invited Assange’s father and brother to the Cry of Independence ceremony.
