This year the winner was Pablo Garcia BorborogluCONICET researcher at the Center for the Study of Marine Systems (CESIMAR), who spent more than three decades studying penguins and leading conservation efforts on four continents. Also president of the Global Penguin Societyan NGO that protected 32 million acres of marine and terrestrial penguin habitat, is the first Latin American to obtain the awardchosen from 6 finalists.

Through understanding breeding, feeding, and migration, his team was able to better understand the habitat needs of the speciesleading to better protection of penguin populations.

“Doctor Pablo Borboroglu is responsible for major achievements in understanding penguin behavior and ecology. It has preserved millions of acres of critical penguin habitat, which is an amazing achievement.” explained a GUESS Rob ShumakerPresident and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoological Society, which awards the award.

“I am incredibly honored and grateful to have been named the winner of the 2023 Indianapolis Prize. This prestigious award will be instrumental in supporting efforts to protect penguins and their habitat,” he claimed Dr. Borboroglu to CONICET, adding that “Requiring land and sea, penguins face unprecedented threats that require large-scale change. Through this award, we hope to inspire and encourage people around the world to take decisive action to protect the environment. Only through our collective efforts can we ensure that our environment and its wildlife can thrive.”
