Google has unveiled the Ultra HDR function for all devices running Android 14, which is expected to reach the general public in the second half of 2023. The new feature is capable of delivering images with more varied colors and a higher brightness quality than common HDR .

Ultra HDR was unveiled at a dedicated conference at Google I/O this year and could be used in Google Photos. The feature will even be compatible with most Android devices available on the market. This facility will also extend to Adobe applications, which will likely gain support for the technology.

More realistic images

Ultra HDR adds Gain Map, a layer of additional information over a standard image. According to Adobe, images optimized for this format offer brighter highlights and more detail in shadows, which results in an improved sense of realism.

Additionally, the Gain Map merges HDR and SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) into a single image, interpolating between both dynamically during display time.

According to Google, when the HDR display is activated in the settings of a cell phone that supports this feature, the rendering of images on the screen happens automatically.

Improvements in the next update

Enrolled in the Android 14 beta test program will have contact with Ultra HDR in the next update, which still does not have an exact date to be released.

Last week, during Google I/O 2023, Google released the second Beta version of Android 14 for compatible Pixel phones and released models from other brands to access the first test version of the new operating system. In addition, Gigante da Web presented four novelties for the next update of the little robot.
