Many people have a difficult relationship with alcohol, but few talk about it as openly as Angelo Kelly did on the MDR talk show Riverboat.

“I don’t drink anymore. An Irishman who doesn’t drink, ne. is there such a thing? Pfui deibel!” This is how Angelo Kelly (41) jokingly touched on the difficult topic. “It’s rare,” confirmed fellow guest Frank Zander (80) with an interjection. On December 16, 2022 he was a guest on the MDR talk show “Riverboat” and spoke to moderator Kim Fischer (53) about his difficult relationship with alcohol.

“Why?” wanted to know the sports presenter Waldemar Hartmann (74), who was also in the panel discussion. “Why? Because I liked it too much,” Angelo Kelly replied seriously. The father of five also honestly answered the question of how long he had been completely abstinent: “Almost a year”. And while “Waldi” Hartmann continued to joke that one can moderate the consumption of alcohol and Frank Zander raised his glass for “A Prost auf die Irishen”, there was applause from Kim Fischer.

Father Dan Kelly (†) suffered from alcohol addiction for a long time

Angelo Kelly also knows from his own family history how devastating alcohol abuse can be. His father Daniel Jérôme “Dan” Kelly, the head of the Kelly Family, died at the age of 71 in August 2002 after a third stroke as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage. It was only years later that several Kelly children spoke publicly about their father’s alcohol addiction. In the RTL2 documentary “The Kelly Family – The journey continues”, the older siblings said that the alcohol excesses had gone so far that they feared being separated from their father and separated.
