It’s probably the most inglorious episode of Lionel Messi’s otherwise illustrious career. Paris St. Germain has suspended its superstar for two weeks because of an unauthorized advertising trip to Saudi Arabia. To make matters worse, the angry supporters chanted insulting songs about La Pulga in front of the Prince Park.
As reported by ‘L’Équipe’, Messi is extremely upset about the events. So much so that it is currently out of the question for him to appear again for PSG. There are still three competitive games left when the world champion has served his sentence. According to the French sports newspaper, it currently seems possible that he will not return to the pitch for this.
PSG could save money
Understandably, the 35-year-old has little desire to be booed on the pitch shortly before the end of the contract period. But it would also have something positive for PSG: if Messi refused to play, the Argentine could continue to be suspended and then save a lot of salary that would not be paid to him during the suspension.
Whether or not Messi returns for Paris, it is already clear that the two years at the Eiffel Tower are coming to an end in a way that is unworthy of many of the greatest footballers of all time. An extension is off the table with the Saudi Arabia gate at the latest. It could go back to FC Barcelona – at least there are no abusive songs and boos waiting there.
