Spring is here, the first green leaves are appearing on the trees – and now, of all times, around 130 trees in Anton-Saefkow Park in the Prenzlauer Berg district have to be felled. The massive clear-cutting is necessary because the trees are affected by sooty bark disease. These are exclusively maple trees, both young and old specimens. The district office says that the felling is necessary because the disease is not only harmful to the trees, but also to people. The spores can cause severe irritation of the airways and inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs (alveolitis).

This year’s inspection of the trees took place a few days ago – it was determined that they were infested with the disease. It is triggered by a fungal pathogen and inevitably leads to the death of the affected tree.

Clearing began immediately because of the health hazard to the people. The statement goes on to say: “The sooty bark disease is only evident when the outbreak of the disease is already advanced. At this point, the inside of the tree is already infested with the fungus.” After felling, the trees must be disposed of immediately to prevent the spores from spreading.
