Apple’s augmented and virtual reality headset is a long-standing project. But the company should present its product in the spring, ahead of WWDC, its annual conference.

Apple has been working on its mixed reality headset for seven years now. But after many postponements, the project should finally be unveiled to the public in the spring. According to information from Bloomberg, the presentation would be scheduled ahead of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), its annual conference in June. Marketing is expected later in the year, in the fall.

Apple first mentioned the project in 2017. At that time, a release was scheduled for 2019. But Reality Pro, the likely name of the device, has been repeatedly postponed to 2020, then 2021. And so on until the last promises which were to see the product put on the market in January 2023.

No price set at this time

This time, the deadlines should be kept. Developers have already had access to the device to familiarize themselves with its operating system, called xrOS (but named “Borealis” internally). With this test phase, accessible to a small number of people, the objective was to launch the production of third-party applications.

Despite these advances, Bloomberg assures that there is still a lot of work for Apple teams before a commercial release. Hardware, software or service aspects have not yet been approved. Also, the selling characteristics are not yet established. This means that the price or the way to promote its product to customers is not yet fixed.

This is why additional resources have been allocated to the project. Several engineering departments have been mobilized, which should delay other brand innovations. Either way, Apple seems determined to make its mixed reality headset the flagship of the year 2023.
