Apple has raised the price of its new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro / M2 Pro Max chip, but has significantly lowered that of the Mac mini.

This is a sufficiently rare occurrence to be reported. If you want to treat yourself to the new, more powerful Mac mini that Apple has just made official, it will cost you 100 euros… less!

With the shortage of components that affected the sector, the price of the dollar which jumped against the euro, the apple brand had rather got into the habit of reviewing all its prices upwards, even products already available. iPhone 14 thus shot itself in the foot by arriving with some interesting novelties, including sending emergency messages via satellite Where accident detectionbut at 110 euros more than iPhone 13 which was only slightly worse in terms of power.

The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max now start respectively at 1329 and 1479 euros when their predecessors were displayed from 1159 and 1259 euros respectively. Similarly, the iPad, iPad Pro, Apple Watch and others have seen their prices skyrocket against a new design, some improvements and functions (except for the Apple Watch Ultra which opens a new range).

Increases on the sly

Apple has very often accustomed to price increases from one novelty to another (except between the iPhone 12 and 13 ranges), but also, since last year, has made adjustments. The AirPods or the iPhone SE released previously have seen the bill start to rise again last fall. In June 2022, the Macbook Air with its old design and its M1 chip, launched at the end of 2020, had on the sly taken 70 euros (from 1129 to 1179 euros) while Tim Cook unveiled the brand new MacBook Air with M2 chip.

Like their competitors on all markets, all apple flocked products therefore experience a price increase due to that of the components. The shortage tends to be reduced, costs to be limited for a slowing PC market, and price increases should now follow more closely that of global inflation.

It is therefore no surprise that the new MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inches, whose main novelty lies in the arrival of a new chip, still take at least 150 euros increase for the version of the MacBook Pro 14 inches with M2 Pro chip (from 2249 to 2379 euros). This is nothing compared to the additional 250 euros to be expected for the 16-inch entry model. It will even cost 300 euros more to win the version equipped with an M2 Max chip. The renewed possibility is priceless.

Note also that the overpower is no longer limited to that of the large format computer. The 14-inch model can now also benefit from the M2 Max chip. On the other hand, forget the idea of taking advantage of the less expensive previous versions, they have disappeared from the official Apple catalog.

The Mac mini as a leader

There remains the rare case of the Mac mini. For a long time, the Californian compact computer was favored by users for its ability to support several aggregated units such as additional storage spaces, its reduced size playing in its favour. Then it gradually declined to disappear from minds, from those of Apple too. Back in the odor of holiness, but not necessarily in terms of sales, it benefits from a certain move upmarket with the possibility of equipping it with an M2 or M2 Pro chip against a simple M1 chip until then. No M2 Max to wait, because it would then be more powerful than the Mac Studio, the compact (but larger) very high-end PC from Apple unveiled in the spring of 2022 and which can be configured with an M1 Max or M1 chip Ultra, still more efficient than the M2 chip and which can compete or even surpass the M2 Pro (and a maximum price too – from 2300 euros).

Lowering the price of the basic configuration of the Mac mini (M2 chip, 256 GB of storage) is also an asset to attract new users who could be tempted by the Studio Display, Apple’s external screen which has experienced laborious beginnings despite its certain qualities. Because to afford the Mac mini in M2 Pro version, the price soars (1549 euros for 512 GB of storage and much more power). Apple may have here a loss leader that it lacked for its range of desktop computers and enough to give a boost to a product cut out for teleworking with minimal bulk, but high performance.
