• Samsung and Apple are neck and neck in the smartphone market
  • Samsung still seems to have sold (barely) more units in the first quarter
  • Xiaomi is the third largest seller in the world, according to a same study

As usual, the Canalys firm has just published its state of the smartphone market for the last quarter. We discover that, as during the same period the previous year, it is Samsung, which appears as the leader with no less than 22% market share, just ahead of Apple and its 21%. Of course, as this is a simple study based on statistics from a limited panel, the results should be viewed with a grain of salt. But the figure corresponds well to the habits of consumers, who mostly choose to equip themselves with our two adversaries of the day, and have done so for several years now.

Among the most popular smartphones of the moment, we find without hesitation les iPhone 14 Pro at Apple and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. For the former, two sizes are offered to the public: one of 6.1 inches and the other of 6.7 inches, each with an A16 Bionic chip under the hood for performance often unequaled – at least at Qualcomm. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, for its part, is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor engraved with a precision of four nanometers, to limit energy consumption, for a 6.8-inch panel.

Samsung stands out with more choices

Among the strengths of the Samsung range, we find above all a wide choice of models and prices. Take for example the Galaxy A04s: at the moment, the device is billed at its manufacturer for only 179 euros, where a Galaxy S23+ costs at least 1,219 euros. At Apple, however, it is impossible to afford an iPhone under 500 euros – in any case for a new product. There are indeed about eight editions offered in the Apple Store today, but all are beyond this invoice.

With this, Samsung can boast of offering its customers expandable storage, thanks to an integrated micro-SD card reader. Unlike iPhones, therefore, which continue to offer exorbitant prices to enhance internal storage: count, for example, +130 euros to go from 128 GB to 256 GB on the basic iPhone 14.

Apple still offers some key advantages, including a perfect integration between its operating system and its hardware, which helps to avoid daily slowdowns. With this, its mobiles are also – most often – recognized as safer, while their camera offers better results as long as it is not a question of touching the basic settings.

And the others ?

For the rest of the Canalys ranking, it actually happens to be Xiaomi qui arrive secondwith 11% market share, two points less than for the same period in 2022. Next come Oppo (10%) and Vivo (8%).

In total, all the other manufacturers, which notably includes Huawei or TCL among its ranks, represent almost a third of the cake with 28%.
