Hate crimes have again led to hundreds of cases at the Berlin public prosecutor’s office this year. By the end of August, the hate crime center had registered 2,606 cases in which people had been attacked because of their religion, sexual orientation or political work.

In 961 of these cases, it is about criminal offenses on the Internet, as director Ines Karl told the German Press Agency on request. Here 659 suspects are known by name. In the year 2021, which was shaped by the corona pandemic, the central office registered a total of 3735 procedures, 1637 of them on the Internet.

The Central Office for Hate Crime has been in existence since September 2020. The Berlin authority was created after the attacks in Halle and Hanau and wants to be able to counter racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of group-related hostilities better. Previously, such cases were generally recorded by the public prosecutor’s office. (dpa)
