At the end of January there is an exhibition on the subject of “Local Identity” in Wanne-Eickeler Hbf. Can it improve the image of the main station?

An exhibition about the “local identity” of Wanne-Eickel will open on Friday, January 27 at 5 p.m. in the former travel center of the main train station. Architecture students from the Rheinisch-Westfälische-Technische Hochschule Aachen implemented it in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn and the support of the city of Herne.

The teaching and research area for real estate project development at RWTH Aachen University and product development at DB Station & Service AG started a cooperative partnership in 2022 to research the needs of residents and travelers at the station at specific locations.

Strong identification with Wanne-Eickel should be strengthened

Several train stations in NRW were inspected together. “We chose the main station because we found the reception hall and the ceiling construction very impressive,” says architecture student Anna-Lena Koll. Together with her fellow students Isabelle Knieling, Hannah Homberg, Svenja Blumberg and Mirjam Sophie Mauel, she is working on the Exhibition in the travel center. The students had looked around in Wanne-Eickel, dealt with the history and conducted surveys. From this they designed the concept for the exhibition in the main station, according to a statement from the city. “The lecturers from Deutsche Bahn and the teaching and research area for real estate project development (RWTH) liked it so much that we were allowed to show our exhibition here,” says Koll. The students are now investigating whether an exhibition can contribute to local identity, to improve the image of the Wanne-Eickel main station.

“In Wanne-Eickel there are many daycare centers, elementary schools, secondary schools and retirement homes. We were able to persuade some of them to design our postcard wall.” An overview of previous activities relating to the development of the former General Blumenthal mine site and an outlook on the next steps are also shown in the exhibition. The works of the artist Dietmar Kremer are also shown. Kremer developed the mascot of the Cranger fair, the pit horse “Fritz”. For years he has been designing a new Fritz pin for every Cranger fair.

The exhibition in the travel center at Wanne-Eickel train station can be viewed free of charge from Saturday, January 28 to Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The opening on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 5 p.m. is also free for anyone interested.
