Driver gesture monitoring is the latest Artificial Intelligence technology to improve road safety, but Polestar goes one step further.

The development of Driving assistance systems (ADAS)entered a new dimension from the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) some years ago. Until then, it was about electronic control devices that did not have the need to use the learning mode that is executed automatically from the behaviors of the users as it happens today.

Early ADAS had features that, while equally important, were much more basic, like the anti-lock braking system we know as ABSor the stability or traction control. Then came the sensors that made it possible to detect pedestrians or obstacles in front and behind, especially useful when parking, to which were later added the cameras that almost all new generation cars have today.

The cruise control It was almost mechanical until then, selecting a speed that the car had to maintain either accelerating or decelerating in case of going up or down, but all were internal processes of each vehicle, without considering the exterior.

But with the advent of dynamic interaction between the vehicle and others, thanks to radars and cameras that are connected to a brain that works by Artificial Intelligence, the great technological change occurred.

Cruise control became adaptive, that is to say that the car maintains its programmed speed but also a distance with those who appear ahead. Also the blind spot presence detector, the lane corrector and even the automatic high beams that go down when a car appears in front to avoid blinding.

The last great advance comes from the hand of the cameras inside the cabins. It is not new, for some time now their purpose is to control the driver’s attention on the road, but the Swedish company Polestar just announced that at the upcoming International Technology Expo, the CES Las Vegas 2023will present their new system Driver Monitoring System (DMS)developed in conjunction with the company smart eyeand who will be on board the brand’s new SUV, the Polestar 3.

The DMS system makes use of two monitoring cameras, working at the same time with the Smart Eye software, which detects movements of the head, eyes and eyelids. If the system considers that the driver is distracted, sleepy, or inattentive, activate warning messages to get the driver out of that situation and back into his role. In fact, in more extreme scenarios, DMS can even run a Emergency stop vehicle.

But the big news is that the new system that will be released at CES Las Vegas 2023, has incorporated the technology that monitor passengers, not just drivers, so that you can act if you encounter behavior that could potentially distract the driver, such as sudden movements in the back seat. The monitoring system includes tracking behaviors such as a child’s dream little one in his car seat or the gestures of a pet like a dog that can alter the normal behavior of passengers.

To develop this system and predict the gestures that require special attentiona job was done programming of the Artificial Intelligence system, showing all kinds of attitudes of men, women and children in a room with walls of a single contrasting color, which allows the cameras to record the different movements of the features of the faces in all kinds of moods.

The act of secretly looking at the phone while driving the car was also simulated and recorded in the brain of the system.

Also were loaded into the program the different ways that people looking at a mobile phone while drivingeither slightly lowering their eyes or tilting their head, in order to record when a driver tries to covertly look at the screen of their Smartphone without being detected.

“We are excited to have our fellow Swedish innovators at our booth at CES,” said Martin Krantz, CEO and founder of Smart Eye, who like Polestar and the parent company Volvois also of Swedish origin and is based in Gothenburg.
